I finished rubbing out a EI/Engleman dred I am building this weekend. I left it laying on a towel on my work bench when I finished buffing it out. When I got home from work last night I noticed a big white glob of something on the back of the guitar. Upon closer examination, a bird had gotten into my garage and took a big dump right in the middle of the back of that guitar.Maybe he was trying to tell me something.My wife and daughter thought it was hilarious. I failed to see the humor in the situation. I could just imagine a big hole burned in the finish where that mess was. I scraped as much of it off as I could with a rubber spatula and then sprayed a little water and wiped the rest of it off. Surprisingly there was only a little outline where the crap was, and it buffed right off with no discernable damage. So I guess the moral of this story is, you can probably advertise your guitars as birdcrap proof. Just an idea.

Oh BTW, did your wife laugh when you used her rubber spatula?

...and one more question...did you let it dry before rubbing it out our does it shine better when still moist?

Umm I really haven't told her. How about if it will just be our little secret .

It was kind of semi-dry, but your comment reminded me when my dad used to tell me I didn't know "S#@* from Shinola". Maybe this kind of Shinola could be the major competitor to Menzerna. Quien Sabe. I think I'll let someone else do the testing and research though.

Jimmie, you should at least be thankful the guitar had finish on it. If the bird had visited you while the guitar was in the white then you really would have had a problem. And, it could have been worse: I have a fellow LINT friend--who will remain annonymous--whose unfinished cedar top was visited by his cat. The cat mistook the lovely piece of cedar for his litter box and proceeded to christen the unfinished wood.

It was eventually used--though the guitar received an opaque finish!

I promise not to use the spatula if you promise not to tell my wife what I used it for. It's history anyway. Serves her right for laughing.
